When Words Don’t Cut It: Nonverbal Techniques Used in Child Therapy

You might have a particular image of therapy in your head—something like lying on a couch and recounting your traumatic experiences while a therapist takes notes from their seat nearby. But children don’t always have the language to explain what they’re feeling, and that’s where nonverbal therapy comes in. At Summer Counseling in Oakdale, Minnesota, our child therapists use creative, play-based, and sensory methods to help kids express themselves, process emotions, and work through challenges in a developmentally appropriate way.

Nonverbal Therapy Techniques and Their Uses

Nonverbal therapy is helpful for children experiencing trauma, anxiety, behavioral struggles, and more. It’s also beneficial for neurodivergent children (those with autism or ADHD). Through play, art, and other expressive outlets, we can create a safe space for healing without relying on verbal communication. Some of the methods we use include:

  • Play Therapy – Toys become the language through which children work out inner conflicts, fears, and relationships.
  • Art Therapy – Drawing, painting, and sculpting allow children to process emotions and experiences they might not fully understand.
  • Sand Tray Therapy – Kids use miniature figures and sand to create stories or scenes that reflect their internal world.
  • Movement and Somatic Work – Activities like stretching or simple yoga help children release stored tension and learn self-regulation.

Play therapy rooms at Summer Counseling are designed to be a warm environment where creativity can flourish. We support children ages 3 and up, tailoring therapy to each child’s unique personality, identity, and needs.
